DIY Mini Pinatas

DSC_0028One of my close friends had a birthday recently, and I wanted to give her something handmade (among other things).  I remember seeing a tutorial for mini pinatas on Oh Happy Day awhile back: tutorial.  It’s such a cute idea and really easy to put together.  Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • Cardboard boxes (cereal box, etc)
  • Scissors
  • Colored tissue paper
  • Glue
  • Pen
  • Masking Tape

First draw out the shape of the pinata you want to make on the cereal box.  I went with the classic donkey pinata.  Draw out and cut out both sides of the pinata.  Then cut out a 1.5 inch strip of card board, several inches long, so you can connect the two sides of the pinata.  Use making tape to tape everything together, so all the pieces are sealed!  Now you can start decorating the pinata.  Play around with the different colored tissue paper – cut strips of paper about 5 inches long.  Then make small vertical cuts, to create a fringe.  You’re now ready to paste the fringe on your pinata.  Remember to start gluing the strips from bottom up.  Try varying the colors to make it extra festive!  I added about 2 to 3 layers of each color before I went on to the next one.

Once it has dried and rested for a bit – pick a candy of your choosing and cut open a trap door at the bottom of the pinata.  Add in the candy and seal!  You can choose to leave a tab on the trap door, for easy access to the candy.  You can play around with different colors and shapes for the pinata!  Check out Oh Happy Day’s entire pinata series here: Pinata Series.
