Seeking a Renaissance in San Francisco
Mission Murals, a set on Flickr.
I chose to go to the Mission last weekend, in my quest to photograph the various SF neighborhoods. It is such a a giant neighborhood that it couldn’t be featured in one set alone. In this posting, I’ve focused only on (some of) the murals in the Mission. There are over 600 murals in the city of San Francisco, many of them located here.
Groups like Precita Eyes Muralists (founded in 1977) are working to preserve the culture of the neighborhood through its art. Many independent artists have taken the challenge themselves, decorating streets such as Balmey Alley, Clarion Alley, and even sidewalks.
This set is a snapshot of a few murals in the Mission. A group of friends and I have a mural idea in the works ourselves, so look out for postings on that in the coming months! I will also be posting a set with photos focusing on the rest of the sights and scenes of the Mission in the next few weeks.
In the meantime, enjoy these snaps and be sure to check these murals out in person! (SF City guides offer FREE tours every Saturday, more info here).
