Seeking a Renaissance in San Francisco
I recently came across, photographer Margo Mortiz, and her work through my Kathak school – Chhandam School of Kathak. Her work spans across various genres: people, fashion, dance, and yoga, to name a few. Margo, herself a dancer, initially moved to San Francisco to pursue her MFA in photography. Describing her work, shes says, “I photograph subjects that are alive and moving. I think great things happen when awkwardness and elegance are combined.”
Being an amateur photographer and Kathak student, I realize how hard it is to accurately capture a dance image. To gracefully capture the expression of the dancer in the midst of a movement is incredibly challenging. It requires the photographer to think on their feet and orchestrate the shot in a split second!
In this series of posts about Pandit Chitresh Das’ production, ‘Darbar,’ I wanted to feature Margo’s recent photo shoot with the Chitresh Das Dance Company. The mood she has created by playing off of the dancers’ movements and poses, is incredible! To see more of her work, visit her Blog and Facebook pages.
