Seeking a Renaissance in San Francisco
I was first introduced to visual, public, and performance artist, Johanna Poethig, through the NOMA Tenderloin Community Benefit District. They had placed a call for community members to assist Johanna with a large scale mural she was painting in the Tenderloin. I immediately jumped at the opportunity to make my tiny mark on the city of San Francisco and signed up to paint!
Johanna’s “Humming with Life” mural is located at Hyde and Golden Gate streets in the Tenderloin neighborhood of SF. It covers the previously grey exterior of the Civic Center Post Office with bright, vibrant tones. The production of the mural began on June 1, 2011 and was completed by the beginning of August. For a week to week account of the process, you can visit Johanna’s blog, at: http://johannapoethig.wordpress.com.
The mural dedication and official unveiling will be happening this Friday, August 26 from 5-6:30pm at Hyde and Golden Gate. The event will feature live musicians and a post office bird sound sanctuary! Below are some photos from my experience. If you are interested in keeping up with Johanna’s other works, visit her site – she has also been involved with several community benefit and community service projects over the years: Community Projects.
