Seeking a Renaissance in San Francisco

Omara Portuondo @ SF Jazz Festival

Omara Portuondo

The 28th annual San Francisco Jazz Festival kicked off on September 14 and will run through until November 20.  The line up of artists is truly a treat – you can see the entire list of artists here: Line up.  One of the artists on their schedule caught my eye – Grammy winner and singer, Omara Portunondo.

The legendary Cuban singer, initially began her career as a dancer during the World War II era.  She added singing to her portfolio, working with Loquimbambla Swing and Cuarteto d’Aida.  She set up her career in Cuba during the revolution and attained a high level of success there.

In recent times, she may be best known for her alliance with the Buena Vista Social Club (that’s how I heard of her!).  Below is a video of one of her performances with the Buena Vista Social Club:

You can catch a live performance of her at this year’s Jazz festival on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 8pm.  For ticketing info, visit here: Tickets.  Enjoy!
