Seeking a Renaissance in San Francisco
Would you believe it if someone were to tell you that all of the ads, billboards, and lights of Times Square could be taken down? Well, it might very well be possible with the new project: Times Square Art Square. The idea was cooked up by Netherlands based designer, Justus Bruns, who states that the project has one very simple goal: to turn all the billboards and ads in Times Square into art! How does he plan to do this? Good question. Check out his master plan behind the project here: Q&A. Bruns wants to promote art in the most advertised block in the world, because in his own words, “art is there to inspire, entertain or at least evoke some unexpected thoughts.” The concept is somewhat simple. Art enthusiasts donate on TSAS’s website to their favorite artist, buying “air time” for them in the process. Based on the money collected, the artist will display their work in place of the billboards that epitomize Times Square.
I completely back the project, but it sounds like a pretty tough act to pull off. Last I heard, Bruns collected enough donation money to get on a flight from Amsterdam to the Big Apple and was headed straight to the Times Square Alliance with his proposal. We’ll have to stay tuned to see if his grandiose idea is turned into a reality… In the meantime, join their facebook page and support the cause: TSAS Facebook Page!
