Seeking a Renaissance in San Francisco
The Chorus from P.S. 22 in Staten Island should be a tell-tale sign for every school, public and private, to keep art and music programs in their K-12 education. The P.S. 22 Chorus, is an elementary school chorus from Graniteville, Staten Island, which has shot to fame thanks to Youtube, Perez Hilton, other social media sites, and of course, the kids’ genuine, endearing passion for singing.
P.S. 22 Chorus was started back in 2000 by Gregg Breinberg, a Staten Island native and former music major from SUNY New Paltz. Breinberg, now 36, came to P.S. 22 in 1999 as a music instructor and started blogging about the kids in 2006. The group became an overnight internet sensation, and as of July 31, 2010, they’ve had 20 million viewers! The chorus, which performs choral versions of pop and r&b songs is truly inspiring and amazing. The children, hardly 10 years old are so passionate about their music. The music gives them something to focus on, something to work towards and take pride in. It is a true testament to keeping arts and music programs alive in schools. Since their fame in 2006, the ever changing P.S. 22 Chorus has performed for Lady Gaga, Beyonce, President Obama, and several other celebrities and has been on NBC, ABC, and MTV among other networks.
